DUBSTEP(H) – i.e. (for Ireland!) Steph goes to Dublin

In lots of ways, I see my sisters as built-in best friends, extensions of myself, and practice runs for when I have daughters of my own. Trust me, we have the love-hate relationship between mother and daughter down pat. (I love them, they hate me.) Jokes aside, visiting my sister in Dublin is something I always look forward to because, if it isn’t already amply clear by now, we are a family that just loves to eat. This is but a small compilation of our fatventures thus far – A LOT more to come!

 

San Lorenzo

I am big on brunch and I don’t think you can visit Dublin without stopping by San Lorenzo for their Brunch of Champions. It’s really popular, so even if you do have a reservation, do go early because the place was already buzzing and there were people queuing out the door when we bounced up. The place is styled to look like a trendy New York eatery with high ceilings and large windows, and they were blasting the most fascinating medley of tunes like Cry Me A River, Come on Eileen, Dance Wiv Me (yes, I did just spell it with a ‘V’), Arctic Monkeys… It was full of young’uns, as proof that there ARE young people in Dublin. The staff were extremely friendly as well, so in general, it had a pretty great atmosphere.

One glance at the menu will tell you that this is really not the place for clean-eating folk. I mean, this is a brunch created for champions, see, so if you are one of those who goes out to brunch and eats granola (which we all know is my pet peeve Numero Uno), then a champion you clearly are not. I myself was rather torn because I wanted to eat just about everything on the menu. In the end I went with the crab cakes, which seemed to be a very popular item with the other diners.

One thing I will say about this place is that the portions are anything but itty bitty. Even the chicken bruschetta, which I saw the girl at the next table ordering, came in a very sizeable portion.

See, it actually took me an entire mini-series of photos just to show you everything in its full glory.

The crab cakes were hefty little things, plump and substantial, with a golden crust; well-seasoned and particularly good with a squirt of lemon. The home fries were very tasty as well, and the poached eggs with hollandaise, clumsy-looking as they were, were still wonderful in all their imperfection.

Now, this next dish is no longer on the menu but I still feel the need to tell you all about it because it was kind of awesome, and actually the whole reason I wanted to bring my sister here in the first place. Ladies and gents, I present to you the Duck Confit Hash.

I may have mentioned before how much my sister loves duck. She insists on going to Gold Mine (see post here) for Cantonese roast duck every time she’s in London, so this dish was right up her street, and oh my goodness was it delicious.

What stole the show was the hashed potatoes, because potatoes in duck fat are probably the best thing since before the internet, and these were no exception.

Even though you can no longer get this, I’ve just checked and they do have something similar in the form of a pulled pork belly hash, which I will definitely look into myself. After all, potatoes in pork fat are probably the best thing since before potatoes in duck fat.

The Brunch of Champions is available only on the weekend. The rest of the time they do an Italian menu, which looks rather delicious as well, but I can’t vouch for it personally as I haven’t tried it myself. I would highly recommend this place for a (very) hearty spot of brunch though!

The Winding Stair

Another place that has become an institution in Dubz is The Winding Stair. It’s apparently named after the Yeats poem, and yes, it does have a winding staircase (duh). It’s quite a small space, rustic and cosy. I’d called up in advance to book a table so we got a window-seat with a pretty gorgeous view of the river Liffey and Ha’penny bridge.

The menu is compact yet sufficiently diverse, and they are very keen to emphasise their use of locally sourced, sustainably farmed, high-quality ingredients. Obviously the menu has changed since our last visit but these photos are just to give you an idea of the sort of food you can expect here.

Don’t know about you but I’m a big fan of Irish soda bread.

Brasserie le Pont

Housed in the pretty Fitzwilliam Hall, this French place was admittedly a little fancier than the other places we usually ate at, with plush, heavy furniture and thick, soft carpeting. Nevertheless, the staff were all extremely down-to-earth, charming and attentive, and the food is really quite reasonably priced, particularly if you come for lunch, where you can have 2 courses for €23. Maybe it’s because of the time we were here – weekday lunch, I believe – but it seemed to be popular with the well-heeled oldies and the suited and booted working crowd.

Again, the menu has changed since our last visit but you’ll notice that it’s a little bit more refined than what we were eating the rest of the time.

Yay bread! We were given a selection of white, walnut and raisin, and Guinness and walnut breads.

Now, I may have mentioned before that my sister loves foie gras almost as much as I do, and I do believe it was the whole reason we came here in the first place, as we both needed our dose of fatty liver.

This was perfectly done, meltingly tender and delicious with the crispy toasted brioche. They served it with wedges of sweet beetroot, crunchy salted almonds and, rather cruelly, thin slices of smoked duck.

Next up was one of the daily specials – grilled beef with couscous, yogurt and cucumber.

I normally have reservations about eating meat any way other than piping hot, but the room-temperature beef, soaked in the cool and creamy yogurt, was actually delightful. The baby spinach was tossed in a honey mustard vinaigrette, but the couscous was forgettable.

For mains, my sister ordered the duck confit (surprise surprise). It was good. Our only gripe was that it could have been fattier. The mash and the accompanying veg were tasty as well.

This was very good. The fish was crisp-skinned, perfectly cooked and flakey. The creamy bean cassoulet actually tasted very much like the sauce that comes with my favourite crab raviolo at Medlar (see post here).

For dessert, we got the chocolate fondant, because – ok fine I’ll stop going through the whole charade of how it’s not my favourite dessert – that is Sister’s favourite dessert. (You’re probably learning a lot about my sister from this post.)

It comes with cherry compote, which I asked to be served on the side because I hate cherry anything, and we switched out the pistachio ice-cream for vanilla because Sister doesn’t do pistache. The fondant itself was alright but the vanilla ice-cream tasted disappointingly shop-bought.

Would I come back here again? Yes, I would. It’s not an everyday kind of dining experience, but it’s well worth trying out if you’re after something a little fancier.

It’s listed as one of the best gastro pubs and won the All Ireland Pub of the Year in 2012. Inside it’s big but almost always packed, the waitresses are a friendly bunch, and the food is good, as far as pub food goes anyway.

I find that, wherever you go, it’s always great to have at least one pub with dependably good food in your arsenal of food places, and I’m glad my sister has this!

The Counter

Anyone who knows me know that I’m almost evangelistic about my at-least-once-a-week burger ritual. The Counter, which is an American chain, came highly recommended, so we decided to check it out one afternoon. Even though we came here at an odd time, it was still crowded, so we had to wait a while for a table.

We decided to get the buffalo wings because they seemed really popular with all the other diners, and with good reason, as they were some rather tasty wings.

I know €11.95 may seem like an exorbitant price to pay for chicken wings but trust me, I hadn’t seen a pile of chicken wings as large as this in a pretty long time. Definitely good for sharing between a few people.

You can build your own burger, and the options are pretty extensive so you can get any number of permutations and combinations you desire. I chose not to customise my burger this time, and instead, ordered their signature burger, figuring that, if it’s good enough for them to put their name on it, then it’s good enough for me.

And it certainly looked promising enough!

Unfortunately, I was really quite disappointed. It sounded quite perfect and indeed, the various components by themselves were good, particularly the crispy onion strings, which you can order as a starter or side. However, the patty itself was overcooked and tough, and given that I like my beef quite, quite rare, this was quite the let-down. Such a shame.

My sister got one of the specials, which was something like a breakfast burger, complete with fried egg and bacon.

Again, I think her burger patty was quite overdone, not to mention that fried egg! Nothing as disappointing as a rubbery sunny side-up ugh.

I think I was disappointed because I wanted so much to like the burgers, which had all the makings to be quite awesome but were just let down by poor execution. To their credit though, their starters and sides almost made up for it. Almost. Besides the wings and fried onion strings, the sweet potato fries were good as well.

If I come back in the future I will definitely be asking them not to overcook my burger, and I’ll definitely get the wings, fried onion strings and sweet potato fries to go with! I do also want to check out Bunsen, Bobo’s and Jo Burger though!

Blixen and a toasted banana bread to rival Lantana’s?! (London)

I love meeting people up in Spitalfields and wandering about the markets, but weirdly enough, I’m never eggcited to eat there. There’s so, so much yet nothing at all to eat – or at least, nothing of consequence.

That may have changed. (We shall see.)

I first read about Blixen earlier this year but only finally made it down last Friday for breakfast with my lovely K, and there honestly isn’t anything quite like brunch with a girlfriend to make the mother of all awful weeks just that little bit better. (When I say awful I mean AW-FUL.)

It really wasn’t crowded at all, but I dislike crowds anyway, so I was secretly very pleased by that, speshly since this meant that we got a really nice table by the window and got to bask in the sun!

The people who run it are the same ones behind Riding House Cafe (see post here) and I think the most telling sign is the decor, which, you will find, is very similar.

Menu-wise it’s a lot less extensive. The dishes are very specific, and by this I mean, you get blueberry pancakes or not at all. They don’t spoil you with countless options of what is essentially the same dish. (You know – Eggs Ben, Eggs Royale, Eggs Florentine…) But that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing! Not at all! It just means that their menu is free of clutter, and you don’t have to work out what goes well with what because they’ve already worked it all out for you, with each dish carefully crafted out of components that really, really work.

Cortados are my favourite coffee so I order one without hesitation whenever I see it on the menu.

The blueberry pancakes arrive in a great stack, very aesthetically pleasing to the eyes. As soon as they set it down in front of you, you’ll be able to smell the cinnamon. So if you don’t like cinnamon then do stay clear of this one, or ask them to hold it, but I do personally think cinnamon is an important component of this dish, so I urge you to try it with anyway.

The texture of the pancakes weren’t the best ever ever everrr but they were still soft and fluffy, though perhaps lacking a little in moisture. I love the flavors going on in this though, and particularly like that the blueberries took center-stage here. Not too sweet or cloying, cooked to a great consistency, and the generous dusting of cinnamon really coaxed the flavor out of the blueberries even more. The addition of creme fraiche was a nice touch as well.

Would definitely prefer these to most other pancakes I’ve had in London, bar Granger and Co’s ricotta hotcakes of course. (Duh.) Much better than the Breakfast Club pancakes, methinks. Plus thumbs-up for generous portions! (For other breakfast/brunch options, see post here – although that list really has to be updated soon, I think)

I couldn’t decide between the baked eggs (was intrigued that it came with lardons, confit duck and aioli, aka baked eggs with FAT, FAT AND FAT, aka the best possible combination) and the croque madame (which came with raclette, jamon and fried duck egg, 3 of my very favorite things). Hmm. So I asked the waitress for help and she recommended the Croque Madame, “hands down”.

And since she was unhesitating, so I was unquestioning. Croque Madame it was.

It arrived with a rather perfect, beautiful fried egg perched quietly atop.

But enough of the eggsterior! Time for EATS.

Alas, few fried eggs are truly perfect. While this looked like an absolute winner, with a crispy circumference you can only get from a good amount of oil, and very evenly cooked white, I would have preferred my yolk just a tad runnier. Just a tad. I promise we were very almost there.

You see, half of the yolk was still desirably runny.

My egg woes aside, this was kind of a perfect sandwich, a great take on the classic Croque Madame. Some of you purists may think that the ingredients sound rather eggstravagant for what’s meant to be a simple sandwich but  I completely disagree. The raclette, jamon and fried duck egg are admittedly an eclectic mix, but it definitely works. Raclette is known to be good for melting, and jamon has so much more complex a flavour than normal ham (though I would happily change my name to Stephamie), and er apparently 1 duck egg has your entire day’s worth of cholesterol, so how can you possibly say no to that?!?! Plus the bread had a crispy crust and a sweet egginess that I really appreciated against the intense savoriness of the jamon and raclette.

Approve. I’ll happily order this again, although I do wish it came in a bigger serving as I liked it so much I was begging for more hehehe. Ok I shall stop now.

Anyway, I ordered a mint tea because I love to eat and drink clean like that.

TOASTED BANANA BREAD!!!!!!!!!!!!

I mean, I HAVE to have both a savoury and sweet option for brunch whenever possible. It’s only right!

Actually scratch that. When toasted banana bread is on the menu, I need make no excuses. I’ve waxed lyrical about how much I love love love toasted banana bread, and Lantana’s is always great (btw, the Old Street branch that used to be called ‘Salvation Jane’ is now called Lantana as well, see post here and here). But very few places offer it, so I was incredibly excited to see this on the menu, and wanted to see how this one stacked up. The question is: Can it rival Lantana’s?!?!

And the verdict? Yes it can. It really can.

It comes with whipped vanilla butter but of course I had to ask for maple syrup and proceed to drown the banana bread in it. As should you. Banana + maple = awesome.

It comes in thinner slices than Lantana’s banana bread, which meant that the crisp-outside-to-moist-interior ratio was better. But portion-wise probably works out to be the same since here they give you 2 thin slices and Lantana gives you 1 fat slice. The aroma of the banana is stronger in Lantana’s but the taste was definitely present here as well. This was slightly sweeter, but what really made it stand out is the accompanying whipped vanilla butter, which is generously dotted with vanilla specks, and is distinctly savoury (they probably used salted butter), which makes it a great contrast to the sweet banana bread.

And so I can say that I would quite happily recommend this as well.

Overall, I can definitely see myself returning. I don’t know if I’ll be able to try anything new, because I may very well order the Croque Madame and toasted banana bread again. I don’t know if I can give this place my ringing endorsement quite yet, because I have yet to try much here, but as far as first impressions go, I’m very impressed, and, for what it’s worth, am far more likely to come here than Riding House Cafe. Service staff here are very attentive and pleasant as well. Also it was really quite cheap. Oh my, I’ve just realised that the toasted banana bread here is A LOT cheaper than Lantana’s. Hmm……………….

But ok I’m still very loyal and will always love Lantana – do go check it out if you haven’t yet been!

If you happen to be around Spitalfields some time, do come and try their breakfast menu! But if you dare order granola, end up disliking it, and writing to me to complain, I swear I will kill you, dehydrate and bake you to a crisp, coat you in the sticky syrup of your own congealed blood, and have you as a topping over yogurt which I will harvest from the milk in your livers (um, milk-livered = cowardly, in case you were wondering lol). Ok that took an unexpected turn. But yeah Pet Peeve Numero Uno.

Let’s just say Im no longer afraid of having brunch in Spitalfields.

Later on I met H in Covent Garden to soak up the last of the afternoon sun. We were just looking for somewhere to chill when we walked by Kopapa, which was extremely empty, so I decided that we should go there as it had been ages since my last visit!

We didn’t have a proper meal here but just for your reference, the items I like off the brunch menu here are the Turkish baked eggs, the chorizo hash and the French toast! I haven’t tried the rest of their menus so I can’t vouch for them.

BUT I CAN VOUCH FOR THIS.

I was craving something cool and sweet and this really hit the spot. It tasted like a melted-down caramel-flavored vanilla ice-cream (which I stress is different from full-on caramel ice-cream, which would just be meh and too one-dimensional), with a good texture – the smoothie was not too thick or icy. The best part was the salted caramel drizzle around the glass, which I was using the end of the straw to scoop up. I’m definitely ordering this again.

And to go with a sweet, creamy smoothie, what else do you crave when the sun is out in full force?

Fries, of course! The bowl that it comes in seems pretty small but there is actually quite a lot in there, and for me to think it’s enough, I’m pretty sure it’s enough for you too. The rosemary aroma and flavour is quite strong.

So I’ve decided not to celebrate my birthday this year, mainly because I am not feeling particularly festive – what with university drawing to a close (if all goes well, that is), I am finding myself staring into the abyss that bisects the end of education and the start of (any sort of) a career, and what’s especially dangerous is that I seem to have taken to filling up my own personal abyss with such a lackadaisical attitude that I’m unlikely to get anywhere any time soon.

Having said that, I have really, really great friends (and family, of course) who won’t hear of me NOT doing anything to celebrate, and so today, we have one of the very first installments of my 22nd birthday festivities! WHOOP WHOOP. Like, a few weeks early, because it’s sort of a combined birthday celebration with my lovely K.

Now, I have been to Duck & Waffle before but that was way before TAG existed, so I never bothered to do a post on it, and was never really planning on doing one. But as K wanted to try it, I was more than happy to go along with her suggestion, and to bring you guys along too since people often ask about it.

D&W is on the 40th floor of Heron Tower - I’ve just done a little nerdy Googling and omg it’s now called Salesforce Tower?!?! Mind officially blown. – so, English weather permitting, you can expect a rather spectacular view, if you are into cityscapes and such. The restaurant itself has massive windows to let the natural light in, since it would be incredibly wasteful to block out the amazing view after all. And after about 3 days of persistently wet weather, it actually turned out to be a pretty sunny day today, so we were really lucky!  Do make sure you request for a table right by the window!

The restaurant is open 24hours with varying menus and according to one of the waitresses, it’s almost always busy, even at 4AM, so do definitely make a reservation in advance just to be safe!

I was hungry so we placed our orders soon after we had sat down and luckily, the food was actually mercifully quick despite the restaurant being quite busy.

But of course, you can’t come to D&W without ordering their eponymous dish – the duck ‘n’ waffle.

I’m guessing it’s a fancier version of the American fried chicken and waffles, which, incidentally, is Miley Cyrus’s favorite food HAHAHA. (Not sure how much of it she actually eats though.) Speaking of which, I still haven’t been to Rita’s, and I really want to go despite the mixed reviews, so anyone who feels like going please let me know!

Anyway. The waffle wasn’t as eggy and fluffy as I would have liked, but the duck itself was crisp-skinned and fatty, and the meat was both succulent and tasty. The mustard maple syrup that came with this should have made for an excellent combination, since the mustard would ideally complement the duck, and the maple, the waffles. Unfortunately, I couldn’t really taste any mustard, so the dish was missing a little of that zippiness it promised, though, all things considered, I suppose it wasn’t that big of an issue.

The rule of thumb when brunching is always 1 savoury + 1 sweet. That’s just the way it’s done.

For me, the peanut butter was very pronounced, so it was the first flavor I picked up on. Again, not the best waffles by any means, but if you like the PB&J combination then I think you would probably like this by default. K really liked the chantilly cream, which was moussily aerated and not too sweet.

After we were done eating (or were we really?) we were very pleasantly surprised when our waiter brought around this sweet little birthday plate, as we hadn’t been expecting anything at all, and even when I’d mentioned earlier on that it was K‘s birthday it was only in passing, in order to make the point that I was really glad it wasn’t raining hahaha. I swear on my life okay. I promise you I am much less subtle when I actually want free food. I usually just ask for it outright hahaha.

But yes, we thought it was very kind of them. And I may as well take this opportunity just to say that I would give this place a… 70-75% rating for service. It wasn’t bad at all, but it wasn’t amazing either, and good service ranks very highly in my books.

The birthday plate was actually a selection of little sweet treats nestled in on a bed of chantilly cream – which was great news for K since, as I’d earlier mentioned, she really liked the cream. The sweets were basically a strawberry jelly that was not unlike Turkish delight, and caramel-filled chocolate truffles.

So. Right. My genius plan whenever I go to breakfast/brunch – though of course it depends on whom I’m eating with – is to sit there for as long as I possibly can until they change the menu, so that way I can also try the all-day menu. I’ve actually discussed this with some of my friends just last week, and told them that my own personal record was sitting at a restaurant from breakfast to dinner. Hahaha. Evidently I am too free.

But I mean. You can’t put foie gras creme brûlée on a menu and expect me to NOT order it. Foie gras iz my kryptonite!!!!!!! Along with sticky toffee pudd, my sweetest downfall… I would betray my country for a lifetime’s supply of foie gras and STP.

I may have mentioned before (actually, I’ve definitely mentioned before) that my favorite way of having foie gras is pan-fried or roasted, but brûléed is an option I really like as well. Once, when I was at dinner with my fambam, I remember the restaurant had all 3 options on a platter – parfait, brûlée and pan-fried – which was seriously my idea of fatty liver heaven. If you like foie gras, I highly recommend you try this dish. There’s something so satisfying about cracking through that carapace of burnt sweetness and plunging your spoon into the cool, creamy depths that lie beneath. And the reason it works, I surmise, is because foie gras is such a rich, fatty substance, so it therefore makes sense for it to be turned into the custard portion of a creme brûlée. And spread onto the toasted, eggy brioche? It restores your faith in how beautiful life can be. Even though it comes in a small-ish portion, the serving size is perfect for a starter since it’s really quite decadent, topped off with a few fat chunks of lobster for good measure.

I would say it’s perfect for sharing, but er… Probably only with the added caveat that you actually love the people you are dining with. Like, really love them.

Oh man. I can’t tell you enough how much I like this hahaha. (But I think I just really like octopus in general.) It’s kind of like everything you love about tapas in one fabulous dish. The octopus was firm and meaty without being tough or chewy in the slightest, and we all know that lemon juice is probably one of the best things you can add to fresh seafood. The briny tang of the capers and the almost-too-salty little nubbins of fried chorizo – but then I’m just not a massive fan of salty food – packed a lot of flavor and gave the dish a distinctly Mediterranean feel. I also liked that the potatoes were not treated as a distraction from the main event, by which I am referring to how some places just casually throw in some potatoes to bulk out their plates. I wish there was an option to make this into a main!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARGH. FRUSTRATION.

Other items which I have ordered on previous visits include the ox cheek eggs benny, the spicy ox cheek doughnut, and oooooh the fried pig ears, the fried pig ears!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Overall, I think, D&W is a place that you should visit at least once, but definitely not a place you would frequent since there’s only so many times you can eat those dishes. Case in point: I’ve defininitely maxed out on the whole roast chicken and salted caramel fondue at Tramshed (see post here) by now, though I would make an exception for those ridiculously good marshmallows that just complete my life. Having said that, D&W is a great place to bring people who are visiting London, or for a rather more special breakfast/brunch where you can actually make reservations – WHAT IS WITH BREAKFAST/BRUNCH PLACES NOT TAKING RESERVATIONS ARGH!!!!!

Anyway, then it was a matter of emptying my belly and getting hungry again for STK at night. Oh, and also Medlar the next day. And the most impromptu trip to Belgium next week. And actually just gastro-NOM-NOM-my (hahaha) debauchery in general. So do please stay tuned for all that!

And, finally, as I’ve spoken today of abysses it brings to mind a certain something Nietzsche once said – Omg. SO, SO NERDY. Hahaha. – which, seeing as I had given K a Nietzsche t-shirt for her birthday last year, is all too fitting right now.

 

He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster.

And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you.

 

So, I’ve decided, if I cannot fill my abyss with determination and drive, I will fill it with food. Since my stomach is, after all, really an abyss in its own right HAHAHA, as I’ve been told on countless occasions.

On another note, one of my friends told me that “filling my personal abyss” sounds rather like a sexual innuendo waiting to happen. Hmm. But to that I say that you should consult your dictionary and also get your biological facts right. An ‘abyss’ is a “deep or seemingly bottomless chasm”, whereas, last I checked, I am still in possession of a working cervix, thank you very much. But boys will be boys. Goodbye.
